The guide books will tell you that Istria has a Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters and long, warm summers.
The average air temperatures are:
- Spring 12.5 degrees.
- Summer 23.4 degrees.
- Autumn 15.6 degrees.
- Winter 5.5 degrees.
There are are around ten hours of sunshine per day in the summer and 2400 hours per year. This compares to the United Kingdom, where the sunniest parts, along the south coast of England, average annual figures of around 1,750 hours.
The clear, blue skies over Istria can sometimes last several months long - from April till October – giving everyone plenty of time to enjoy the warm seas and balmy evenings.
We first visited Istria in January with the express intention of finding out what the weather was like in the winter.
During our trip we found it to be bright and sunny in the day and cold at night. Coats were required but it was more than possible to enjoy a drink in the sunshine at an outside café along the sea front.
Since that first visit we have been in Istria in every month of the year and are pleased to tell you truthfully about the climate.
Today's Weather In Poreč

Spring in Istria is a beautiful time with summer around the corner and everyone busily preparing for the coming tourist season.
The weather can be unpredictable with one day never the same as another. Temperatures increase but the warmer days are often interspersed with heavy showers. This does nothing to dampen spirits as it is very rarely that a whole day is spoilt by rain and the resorts are gloriously quiet.
You can wake in the morning to torrential rainfall and by lunchtime be sitting under a clear blue sky sipping a cold drink.
It is time to dig out some shorts, tuck a rain coat in your pocket and to stroll around the town before taking a leisurely lunch in a favourite restaurant, not yet busy with the throng of tourists.
It is a great opportunity to use one of the many cycling tracks, take a long country walk or indulge in a round or two of golf before the intense heat of the summer make such activities less attractive for most of us.
During the Summer Time
Most days are very warm and sunny with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees during the day with balmy evenings. You will get the occasional shower which after a few weeks of uninterrupted sunshine can be very welcome indeed.
The atmosphere all around Istria buzzes.
Voices from around the world can be heard in the streets and restaurants and the coastal towns are lively and exciting.
Further inland, life continues at a slower pace and there is always a quiet corner to be found for those that know where.
Autumn sees a cooling of the temperatures but the lovely warm evenings prevail and it is possible to use our swimming pool until mid October, when the rain makes it a little colder than most would enjoy.
There are fewer tourists now and life returns to its gentle unhurried way.
Swimming and sunbathing can still be enjoyed most days and once again it is possible to enjoy walking, cycling and golf without suffering from heat exhaustion. The beauty of the countryside also make a long horse ride a very enjoyable experience.
In Winter the temperature only occasionally falls below zero degrees so there is very rarely frost or snow.
Although there are many sunny days when the skies are blue and it is quite possible to take a walk along the coast and sip a coffee in an outside café, it can be wet and windy. However, all is not lost.
On inclement days the only thing to do is batten down the hatches and gather around our roaring log fire.
Many of the restaurants also have large open fireplaces and are open all year round offering warming traditional fare such as Istrian soups and stews.

Best of all there is variety.
Seasons are seasons.
You may indeed prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and autumn and even winter offers a welcome break from the dowdy greyness of the United Kingdom.
